Public consultation

The Truman Brewery has made a long-term commitment to the area and has sought to ensure that its proposals are in line with the aspirations of the local community.

We undertook extensive community engagement, including a public exhibition in March 2019 and many meetings with interested local groups and residents. You can find the full materials shared at the public exhibition on the ‘Find out more’ page.

Through the consultation process, local people and groups identified a number of aspects of the proposals that they wanted to see updated so that the scheme could better meet local needs. We have sought to respond to this feedback and accordingly developed our proposals with a number of improvements.

Our latest plans include amended designs that seek to further expand, activate and improve the proposed new public spaces; improve safety and discourage anti-social behaviour; ensure that the proposals are more in keeping with the local context; improve sustainability and biodiversity; and provide further comfort regarding overlooking and privacy for neighbours on Woodseer Street.

Application details

A planning application was submitted to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in February 2020. This can be found on the Tower Hamlets Planning Portal here (or by searching using the planning reference PA/20/00415/A1). Following feedback from the Council, local residents and stakeholder groups on our submitted proposals, we have brought forward a number of changes to the plans for Brick Lane and Woodseer Street, all of which we feel are improvements to the proposals. These changes have been summarised in the 'Further responses to feedback' section below and further details are available in the Design and Access Statement addendum (link below). We have provided direct links to some of the key planning documents below – the full pack of documents is available on the Tower Hamlets portal. Further responses to feedback

Our amended designs seek to further expand, activate and improve the proposed new public spaces; improve safety and discourage anti-social behaviour; ensure that the proposals are in keeping with the local context; improve sustainability and biodiversity; and address concerns regarding overlooking and privacy for neighbours on Woodseer Street. In November 2020 we submitted amendments to the planning application, originally submitted in February 2020. These include:

  • Improvements to the building materials, by replacing the curtain wall glazing with brickwork on the upper floors of the new building along Woodseer Street, ensuring a more consistent design and improving energy efficiency

  • Significantly increased outdoor space on New Dray Walk, with the upper floors of the new building at 140 Brick Lane significantly cut back to achieve this

  • A new management/security hut in Black Eagle Yard Bold with security personnel assisting the public and managing visitors’ behaviour

  • Further measures taken to mitigate overlooking from new terraces, with new biodiverse planting on terraces

  • Design changes to further activate the Brick Lane and New Dray Walk frontages, including creating additional active retail and restaurant frontages on New Dray Walk and Brick Lane

  • Redesign of the proposed shopfronts at 146 Brick Lane Bold to distinguish them from the shopfronts in the new building at 140 Brick Lane opposite, also better highlighting the industrial character of the existing 146 Brick Lane building

  • Additional sustainability measures, including a significant reduction of glazing and additional photovoltaic solar panels

  • Further enhancements to local biodiversity, including high-quality native trees planted on Woodseer Street and in Black Eagle Yard; new planted areas on terraces; new green roofs; new climbing plants; and new bird and bat boxes
